The Children's Home in Binghamton has finalized its purchase of the Western Broome Boys and Girls Club.

What You Need To Know

  • The facility will offer various programs including: swimming, workouts, youth and children programs, after school programs.
  • The building was purchased for $500,000
  • There is no timetable on when the facility will open.

The facility shut down last August, and now a new organization is taking over.

"Although it took perhaps longer than we expected, we're thrilled to be here today," said The Children's Home President and CEO George Dermody.

The not-for-profit purchased the building for $500,000. It's been a tough few months, but they hope this new community center will be a part of the new normal.

"The new start for the former boys and girls club as the Southern Tier Community Center will grow along with that. And we think it's going to be a great symbol and a great spot for the rebirth and regrowth in our community," said Dermody.

The facility already has great resources and county leaders can count on child care being provided, whenever the pandemic allows.

"As we get people back to work, we're going to really be hoping that they're going to be able to provide additional daycare options. I don't know if they're going to be able to provide it as soon as the summer," said County Executive Jason Garnar.

But when the community center does open, the Children's Home says it will be an extension of what they already do.

"And we think having a positive place to grow, to recreate, to learn, and to come together fits in with our mission and fits in with what's best about our community," said Dermody.
