Protestors filled parking lots for a car rally, in front of NY Taste, where Broome County Executive Jason Garnar gives his daily COVID-19 update.

Rallyers are calling for the release of inmates from the Broome County Jail.

"Having people incarcerated right now is very dangerous, not only the people incarcerated, not only to the county employees who go there to work every day, not only to the CO's that are interacting with incarcerated people but our entire community," said organizer Andrew Pragacz.

It's the second rally for these demonstrators in Broome County. And County Executive Jason Garnar wants his first message to be heard.

"I wish they would actually listen to us when we tell them numerous times what the process is for releasing a prisoner," said Garnar, explaining he cannot put people in jail, nor release them.

11 inmates are in a secluded pod in the jail, after testing positive for the virus. The sheriff also says ten corrections officers and a deputy have tested positive too.

"Look I understand this, whether it's a nursing home, or a jail, these are tightly controlled environments where people are put in together," said Garnar.

Family members of inmates spoke out at the rally, saying there aren't sufficient resources in the jail.

"He has asthma, he's on three inhalers a day, he uses them a lot, he hasn't had one since he's been up there," said Irene Lunn, a family member of an inmate.

Garnar says the county will provide whatever resources are needed, no matter the facility.

"Whatever supplies the sheriff tells me he needs to protect whether they're prisoners, correction officers or any other staff that work at the jail. Just like we work to procure PPE for hospitals and nursing homes we will work to do the same for the jail," said Garnar.

1100 parole violators in New York were released from jail three weeks ago.
