The village of Deposit is cutting its police department and court system.
The votes came in Tuesday as 235 people voted yes to abolish the court system with 150 against it. 229 voted to abolish the police department with 156 against it.
Now, community members won't be without a police presence. The village has signed a contract with Broome County Sheriff's Office that will place a full-time patrol officer in Deposit six out of the seven days of the week.
Residents may also get police help from Delaware County, who is also expected to provide police support.
While not everyone is happy with the outcome, some think it's the right choice.
"It's a huge tax savings for this village that we're going to be giving back to in a tax cut this year. That's the first time in quite a while there's been a tax decrease," said Deposit Mayor Bryan Moore.
Some residents agree about the financial savings.
"People just can't afford to live here and especially a lot of the seniors who are on a fixed income. It's very hard," said Ruth Folejewski.
Others aren't sure if there will be quality police coverage.
"When you're taking an entity out of the place to be fulfilled by two or three other entities, it's not going to happen. Because they could be here anywhere because Broome's side is part of Broome County and Delaware side is part of Delaware County," said David Tranvaag, a Deposit patrolman.
The mayor says neighbors will get immediate coverage. Broome County Sheriff Dave Harder says a full-time patrolman will be focused on the village.
The change will take effect March 1.
