An ice rink is being built at Binghamton's Recreation Park.
Mayor Rich David made the announcement Tuesday morning. The plan is to open the rink this weekend. The ice rink is relatively small, but the mayor says it can be made bigger if lots of people use it.
It will use a compressor to make ice manually, helping skaters get the most out of the rink.
"You could go weeks the old-school way and not have skateable ice,” said Binghamton Parks Commissioner Paul Palmer. “Could be soft and then when it's soft like that, sometimes people can't keep off it. So you end up with footprints, broken ice, so it takes some time to get that back to a skatable surface."
The rink will be open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until dusk, with extended hours on the weekends. Skating is free, but you'll have to bring your own skates to hit the ice.
