People looking for a splash in Johnson City this summer will have to look outside their usual public pool.

Floral Park's swimming pool is closed for this season for a number of reasons, including because Mayor Greg Deemie says the village struggled to find lifeguards, and other maintenance issues with the pool.

The pool was built more than half a century ago and could use some work.

"It basically needs to be totally re-done. We had liners done but the liners are leaking, the concrete base is leaking, the drains need to be re-done on it," Deemie said.

Yet, local residents are disappointed in the news of its closure.

"The friends from my youth group program usually come here, play basketball, and do a little swimming. So now we got to find a new spot to go swimming, so that's going to be kind of hard," said Johnson City resident Elijha Fuller.

But Mayor Deemie and the village board are not giving up on the pool completely.

"We're going to do something over there, we're not just going to leave it with nothing there. Either the pool will be re-done or we'll have a spray park over there."

Residents who attended the CFJ spray park raved about the outside facility.

"When you're dealing with a pool system set up it takes a lot of work to keep that going, but the sprinkler system, I think, wouldn't be as much as a problem. It would be even better for them. It's a great idea," said neighbor Portia Barnett.

The village board will discuss the future of the swimming pool during a meeting on June 18.
