The United States women’s national soccer team’s quest to defend its World Cup championship is underway.

The women won the 2015 tournament in Canada and have their first match against Thailand Tuesday. Many fans are cheering on the ladies Tuesday afternoon, but others are unaware of the tournament.

Syracuse University Endowed Professor of Sport Management Rick Burton says he's surprised the World Cup isn't a bigger deal. He says there's been a lack of coverage and that's leading to a lack of buzz around the team.

There's also a lawsuit between the women's team and U.S. Soccer over pay equality. Burton says U.S. Soccer might not have marketed the team the way it deserves.

"In an age of #MeToo, in an age of empowerment — as an armchair feminist, and I say that with pride — I had daughters and I want the most for women's sports, because it's good for the entire industry. I don't think we're seeing the bump I would have expected," said Burton.
