Overnight and early morning thunderstorms caused substantial damage to parts of the Southern Tier.
According to the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, the areas with the most reported damage includes the Town of Binghamton, Town of Conklin and Harpursville area.
The National Weather Service said later Monday that a microburst struck Conklin, holding winds at an estimated 70 mph.
The storms, which brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, knocked numerous trees and power lines down across the region. Tornado watches were issued briefly for some areas.
To make matters worse, in the middle of the storm, when they were needed most, a nearby fire department wasn't able to respond.
Downed wires and trees were laying in front of the Conklin Fire Department, not allowing their trucks to get out.
"It's just another challenge. We had roof damage from the August flood so we've been dealing with that and this is just another thing you deal with and hopefully the insurance will cover it and move on from there," said Bill Gorman, Conklin Volunteer Fire Station 1 Chief.
The storm also wiped out the brick layer on the side of the fire station.
It comes as the volunteer department just finished another cleanup.
Volunteers tried to help in any way they could.
"It's just what we do. It's volunteer and we don't get paid anything but we just do what we have to do and we love our town and we'll do whatever we have to, to keep it safe," said Gorman.
Crews will spend the day repairing damage and restoring electricity.
