"Briefly I thought about giving up," said Brackney Inn owner Greg MacBlane.
But, MacBlane preserved.
MacBlane got a call from a cook in October 2017, saying the 170-year-old business was on fire.
"I thought it was maybe just some guy burnt his food in the stove and his apartment was smokey,” said MacBlane. “I was driving here thinking it was probably no big deal, but when I got here, the whole place was in flames."
Following months of cleanup and repairs, the hometown staple was nearly back up and running the following June. But, just days before doors opened, another fire ripped through the building, destroying the business once again.
MacBlane didn't believe the phone call.
"It's impossible,” MacBlane said. “It's probably just the burn pile. They're probably burning some boxes or some wood and she said hang on, I'll call you back and I drove down here and called her back and said no, it's not the burn pile. It's the building.”
Now, 17 months later, the Brackney Inn has officially re-opened. MacBlane says it was result of months of hard work and community support.
"My contractor who was doing the first one said, ‘Greg, it's not that big of a deal. We'll order the trusses and the roofing. All you have to do is take that order and do it again,’" said MacBlane.
Since the first fire, MacBlane was hounded with the same question - When will it re-open?
He says while the decision was difficult, he's happy with the one he made.
"I don’t know how many people tell me they met their wives here,” said MacBlane. “It's just a place for friends and family and neighbors to come meet. A lot of hard-working guys come in after work and want a cold beer."
While the kitchen isn't fully operational just yet, the bar is offering limited food options for the next few weeks.
