Jason Garnar addressed the state of Broome County.
The theme of the Broome County Executive's speech was 'The Power of Partnerships.'
"You've heard what can happen and what will happen when we work together in Broome County,” said Jason Garnar.
Jason Garnar wants to redevelop blighted buildings. The Ansco Camera Factory hosted the event and is undergoing a transformation of its own.
"Seeing what's happened in this building, it's an amazing transformation of a building. You know we just saw living proof of young professionals who were going to move out of this area if they couldn't find a place like this to live."
Improving neighborhoods also comes down to improving safety. Fighting the opioid epidemic is one of the keys to helping quality of life.
The number of fatal overdoses went down last year and new treatment programs in the Broome County jail may help continue that trend.
"Hopefully it will benefit by getting them cured of their addiction problem. And by getting their cure from the addiction problem, it keeps them out of jail because they won't be getting in trouble. We look at that as a plus,” said Broome County Sheriff David Harder.
Now, Garnar will take his message on the road, visiting communities throughout the county.
