Community leaders across New York State are warning residents to stay home until the storm passes. However if an emergency forces you to hit the road, there are a few things to keep in mind to avoid an accident.

Hurricane force winds, like those forecast to sweep across the state can blow your vehicle, making it difficult to drive.

The faster you drive, the stronger the wind's effect will be.

Experts say to keep a firm grip on the wheel and be on the lookout for open, windswept areas where gusts are likely to be strongest. Larger vehicles like buses, vans and box trucks are more susceptible to the wind so give them some room in case the wind blows them off course.
