BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The  Broome County District Attorney's Office will have a new leader in 2020.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Mike Korchak announced his candidacy Tuesday.

This comes after current District Attorney Steve Cornwell said he will not seek re-election.

The Chief A.D.A spent 30 years as an attorney, prosecuting some of Broome County's biggest murder trials.

He's hoping that experience will earn him the seat.

"Someone coming from the outside won’t have the experience and the knowledge of someone within the office and that based with my trial experience and my experience as a defense attorney and a prosecutor I feel makes me uniquely qualified for this position," said Mike Korchak, (R) Broome County District Attorney Candidate.

Korchak joins fellow Republican Paul Battisti who also announced his interest in the job.

They will likely square off in a primary.
