VESTAL, N.Y. -- A major bridge in the town of Vestal is set to be closed until further notice.
Crews plan to begin work on the Main Street connector over Choconut Creek Tuesday morning.
The bridge was recently declared an emergency when an expansion joint broke.
Several areas of concrete are also deteriorating.
Detours will be in place at Meeker Road and Pierce Hill Road.
Town Supervisor John Schaffer says if repairs weren’t made now, plows couldn’t cross in the winter.
"I know everybody is going to be a little unhappy they're going to have to take alternate routes, but it's what it is right now and the safety of the community is a lot more important than putting it off until spring," Schaffer (D) said.
The bridge is expected to be re-opened by the end of October.
