ENDICOTT, N.Y. -- Officials in Broome County are hoping to promote reading to some of their youngest residents.
On Tuesday, the county executive partnering with SUNY Broome to announce the "Baby's First Book" program.
Every child born in either UHS or Lourde's Hospital will receive a copy of the book "Baby Cakes."
The director of the George F. Johnson Memorial Library hopes programs like this convinces families to check out their local library.
"It is critical for parents to bring their children into the library," said George F. Johnson Memorial Library Director Edward Dunscombe. "We're really talking about the potential of young children which really translates into the potential of our community, the potential of our society and the potential of our country."
The county executive will also send along a letter with a list of all Broome County libraries.
