Hundreds of workers at a Tioga County plant have learned they'll be losing their jobs, some right before the holidays.
"I think the community, any time it happens, they feel bad for anyone who loses their job,” said Don Castellucci, the Owego town supervisor. "Just stay positive. I think the economy is starting to turn on a national level. In the long run, hopefully there will be a market here where they can use their talents."
County leaders heard from Sanmina on Thursday that the company's plant in Owego will close by March 7.
The company has 274 permanent employees. Some will be relocated, but Tioga County officials say 161 will lose their jobs. And 50 temporary employees were let go Thursday morning.
Sanmina hasn't said yet why it's closing the plant.
