Parents and students rallied Tuesday ahead of a court hearing on the potential eviction of a charter school in the borough.
Supporters of Middle Village Prep held a protest in front of Queens County Court ahead of a hearing on its possible eviction. The charter school is on the campus of Christ the King High School, which is overseen by the Diocese of Brooklyn.
The diocese sued Christ the King for agreeing to house the charter school without consent. Now, 380 Middle Village Prep students are waiting to learn the school's fate.
“The most important thing for me, the reason I'm here, is because of the psychological damage that the children are going to suffer,” said parent Robert V. Conte.
“When I heard that the school might be closing I started, like, crying and I was so worried that if it closed where would I got to school,” added Roisin Herlihy, a sixth-grader at the school.
In response, the Diocese told NY1 in a statement it “wants Middle Village Prep to remain open and the students to thrive. The judge today encouraged Christ the King and the diocese to work this out. We want to do that and are extending an invitation to the CTK board members to sit down and talk.”
