CORNING, N.Y. -- A multimillion-dollar project to restore an aging bridge in Corning has become one of the city's top priorities.

The Bridge Street bridge was built back in 1937 and hasn't been rehabilitated since 1999.

City officials say the steel is now degrading and the infrastructure is deteriorating.

It will cost approximately $6.6 million to make the necessary repairs, with most of the funding coming from state grants.

Once construction begins, the bridge will be shut down for several months.

The bridge serves as the main artery between the city's north and south side.

"It's an important structure for our transportation and movement of the local cars in particular," said Rich Negri, Corning mayor. "And we're getting all the funding from the state and the federal government so we only have to put in a small share of $87,000 from the city."

The mayor doesn't expect construction to begin until 2019.
