Pennsylvania DOT workers gathered Friday in Towanda to remember one of their own with a memorial for Leah Miller Rumsey, a worker killed in 1996 when she was hit by a car in a work zone.

Rumsey's family was at the service, along with dozens of her colleagues.

The memorial included 87 posts, which represent the 87 employees who have died in work zones since 1970.

Leaders from the community were at the service to remind the public to drive safe.

"To ensure people are cognizant, are aware as they're driving through work zones. Whether it's a PennDOT work zone, or contractors, these are folks, these are mothers, these are fathers, these are sons and daughters. Please obey the speed limit, and please don't be texting or on a cellphone," PennDOT Assistant District Executive for Maintenance Eric High.

Officials say texting has increased the number of work zone crashes in recent years.
