A new law will now make it easier for gun owners in the Southern Tier traveling across the state border.
The Broome and Susquehanna County sheriff offices announced Tuesday that residents of both counties can now apply for pistol permits in the other.
Pennsylvania applicants must either own land or work in New York state to be eligible. New York residents will not have any restrictions when applying for a Pennsylvania permit.
Applications must be filled out at either sheriff's office, or online.
Both departments say the partnership is something that was long overdue.
"It's not something really new. We'll say it's something that's being brought up more and more. Residents of Pennsylvania traveling to New York state would like to brings their guns in and vice-versa," Broome County Sheriff David Harder.
Pennsylvania residents who work in New York state can only keep their weapon at their place of work.
In a separate deal, Chemung County and Bradford County reached a similar agreement in January.
