WAYLAND, N.Y. -- The body of a man was found Monday after a house fire was extinguished in Wayland.

The fire was spotted by a driver who was on his way to work at 4:30 a.m. Monday. The home is in a rural area, and investigators say if the driver hadn't seen it, the fire may have gone unnoticed for hours.

Eight fire departments from nearby villages responded to the call. Firefighters were unable to salvage the home.

“The residence was totally engulfed in flames," said Curt Eaton of the New York State Police. "By the time the responding fire departments arrived on scene and started their suppression efforts, the house was pretty much gone.”

Police say in rural areas like this one, there are no water sources or hydrants available, making it difficult to contain fires.

New York State Police and the Steuben County Fire Investigation Team are still determining the cause of the fire. Authorities did not immediately identify the victim.
