OSWEGO N.Y-- For more than seven decades, Wade's Diner has been the go-to spot for breakfast in Oswego. But after a fire ripped through the restaurant earlier this year, owner Anthony Zappala knew a change was needed.
"It's going to be a fresh start. I'm bringing Wade's into the 21st century. I'm not sure my people are going to like that but we'll be in the 21st century now. Their kids are going to get to enjoy what they did 40 to 50 years ago," explained Zappala.
The good news is the first step of the rebuilding process is not far off. Demolition on the old building is set to begin this week.
"I'm excited. We spent a lot of time planning this. A lot of time changing things around. Reworking the program. I think we got it where we want it now."
News of the demolition has already spread throughout the community. Many are excited the staple will return.
"I would say it was an institution for Oswego. It was where the townies went for breakfast. Everybody's got a Wade's story. I think the whole town is looking forward to it opening back up," said Oswego resident Wiliam Mitchell.
"Same menu. Same prices. Nothing will change except the inside will be a little cleaner, neater and a little less greasy," added Zappala.
Demolition should only take about one or two days and then the rebuilding process will begin.
Zappala says the diner should be back up and running early next year.
Community members can still purchase special bricks that will eventually be used in the outdoor patio.
