ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A national Broadway tour that kicked off on the Clemens Center stage in Elmira brought more than theater to the area.
The Tony-award winning Mel Brooks musical "The Producers" performed its final show in Elmira Wednesday before moving on to the next leg of the tour.
Over the past few weeks, the production needed nearly 3000 man hours to make sure the kick-off went off without a hitch. For union workers, the opportunity to work as stagehands for the musical was a blessing.
The crew counted on these workers to help fine-tune and adjust the sets to accommodate the many different-sized theaters throughout the rest of the tour.
"As you can imagine, each theater is a different depth, different width, different height, and they have to accommodate each place they go, so they are refabricating a bit while they're here and just tweaking things so they'll be able to go on the road and accommodate at any size theater they go to," Clemens Center's Executive Director Karen Cromer said.
Clemens Center renovated its stage back in 2008 to accommodate such large-scale productions. The last time a Broadway show launched from the Clemens stage was in 2011 with "My Fair Lady."
