BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Casa di Pizza is trying to reassure customers that their restaurant is a safe place to eat after a server was diagnosed with Hepatitis A.
"We had an employee that asked to leave early Thursday afternoon, complained of flu-like symptoms,” said Casa di Pizza Manager Jim Jacobbi.
“[I] thought it was the flu because it was flu season. Sent that person home and didn't think anything else of it until Friday evening when we got a call from the Erie County Health Department."
The health department said that employee had Hepatitis A, and the restaurant needed to be inspected to see if the virus had spread. Casa di Pizza was closed Saturday morning while that inspection took place.
“The health department was here 9:30, 10. About three and a half, four hours later when we got the thumbs up, that's when we got opened up,” said owner Joe Jacobbi.
The health department concluded there was no issue with the food. Joe Jacobbi says that makes sense because a server’s only interaction with the food is handing it to customers.
"It's a precaution,” Joe Jacobbi said. “They felt the chance was almost nil, but again, they have to be proactive on it."
Still, customers have been wary. Jim Jacobbi says they have had to send employees home early over the last few days because business has been slow.
Joe Jaccobi says he wants people to know that as a precaution, all of his employees have now been vaccinated for hepatitis A.
"On Monday, my main thing was to get as many employees over. They ended up doing it at Children's Hospital for my employees, which worked out great, and trying to get all these employees together at one time, it's tough, but we got 'em," Joe Jacobbi said.
To apologize for any inconvenience, through March 31st, Casa di Pizza is selling a large pizza for $10.99 instead of $16.99. Customers who went to get a vaccination will receive 25 percent of their bill.
As for the server, Joe Jacobbi says they will be welcomed back as soon as they get approval from the health department.
"When they give me the clearance, they can come back," Joe Jaccobi said.
