HORSEHEADS, N.Y. -- The search for a Horseheads police chief may not leave Chemung County.

The village and county are expected to enter a shared service agreement to help oversee village police.

In the proposed agreement, the county Sheriff's office would provide administrative services to Horseheads police, with an undersheriff also serving as chief.

The village's staffing and officers would be unaffected.

Officials said the agreement would save the county around $100,000 a year.

They said it's a proposal that benefits all involved.

"We see it quite frankly as a very positive initiative that will benefit our taxpayers, the village residents," Horseheads Village Manager Walter Herbst said. "It will benefit the police force with technological improvements, and it will benefit the county by all of the police agencies being tied together."

The Horseheads Board of Trustees approved the agreement Thursday night.

The Chemung County legislature will vote on the proposal at an upcoming meeting.
