MONTICELLO, N.Y. -- After many delays and appeals, Monticello Mayor Gordon Jenkins is now serving a 45 days in Sullivan County Jail.
But, Jenkins didn't go quietly. When the judge asked if he had anything to say Jenkins said he feels like people in this community are targeting him and calling it a shame and a travesty what's happening.
"I think it's a travesty and I think it's a public lynching," said Jenkins.
Gordon Jenkins surrendered himself in Sullivan County Court before Judge Frank Labuda Tuesday.
"It's sad that a man protects himself from his store someone comes in to threaten me in my own store and I got to jail for 45 days," said Jenkins.
Jenkins was convicted of obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct. This, after he was arrested for punching a police officer during an argument with another man in 2012, outside his 'G-Man Beauty Supply Store' on Broadway.
"There is no other place in the world Mr. Jenkins where justice is served and justice has been served," said Frank Labuda, Sullivan County Judge.
Judge Labuda told the court that Jenkins and his attorneys have exhausted every legal avenue. However, both Jenkins and his attorneys disagree.
"The sentence of the court the local court not this court, which imposed a sentence which I believe is inappropriate and extraordinarily high for what Mr. Jenkins was convicted of," said Jenkins' attorney Amy Attias.
Part of the 45 day jail sentence also includes three years probation.
"I think it's an embarrassment to the courts and this whole Sullivan County what they're trying to do here," said Jenkins.
At this time attorneys for Jenkins say they're not pursuing any further legal recourse. The Sullivan County District Attorney said he has no comment on this case at this time.
Jenkins has had his share of run-ins with the law.
Last year, he pleaded guilty to a DWI charge, and he was also arrested and charged in connection with the botched demolition of the old courthouse building.
Throughout all of Jenkins' arrests, he has maintained he will not resign from office. He has also repeatedly claimed that his arrests are racially-motivated.
