The holiday is all about giving. And no one knows that better then Corinne Bandera.

For as long as she can remember, she spent time in an American legion, supporting her family’s mission.

Bandera is a third generation member of the Bandera family, a family that’s been hosting a free Christmas dinner for more than 30 years.

“For my grandparents to see how big it is now, they would be heartwarmed to see that we still participate, to know how many people we feed, and not even just feed, the people we touch," Bandera said. "The smiles, it is the best feeling in the world."

Her father, Bill Bandera, passed the tradition down from his parents, and they haven’t looked back.

Ever since the dinner started 32 years ago, they’ve gone on to serve more than 3,000 people each year, and that need only continues to grow.

“What blesses me the most is seeing not just the participants, the people who receive the meals, but the volunteers," Bill Bandera said. "They’re blessed just as much and I get to watch that every December, every year and it touches and blesses my heart."

Of course, the Bandera mission never would be possible without the help of the community. Dozens upon dozens of volunteers lend their time to make sure everyone has a happy holiday season.

“I learned a long time ago that I can want to do this, but you can’t do it alone," Corinne said. "You need the help of the community and the volunteers. What’s really cool is we get people who have been here for 10 years and we get people who it’s their first time here, so we get a rotation going though. It’s nice."

Bandera Christmas dinners will be held at St. Ambrose Church in Endicott and American Legion Post 80 in Binghamton on Christmas Day. Deliveries are also being offered with online orders.
