Binghamton Police are investigating the shooting death of a 12-year-old girl Thursday night, according to Mayor Jared Kraham.

The girl was shot on Bigelow Street, near the intersection of Chamberlain Street, on the city's east side around 10 p.m. Thursday.

Officials said she was hit by one single bullet, but it was not a drove-by shooting event. It is still unknown how she was shot or by who.

The mayor identified the girl as Aliza Spencer. Binghamton school officials released a statement Friday that said Aliza was a "bright, talented child" who attended East Middle School.

"The death of someone so young is always tragic, and we will work to support our students and colleagues as they cope with this terrible news," the statement read.

“It’s just horrendous. Violence is terrible and now we have a girl who’s 12-year-old girl shot and killed," Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said. "It’s alarming. It’s a horrendous act committed by someone, or more than one person, we don’t know. It’s heartbreaking as the mayor said. It’s a terrible thing as the mayor said and all resources we have will continue into this until we have a conclusion, one way or another.”

There's now a $10,000 reward for information releated to the case. Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest is asked to call the Binghamton police detective division at 607-772-7080.
