VESTAL, N.Y. — A Vestal man was found dead and his mother injured after a domestic dispute.

It happened Wednesday morning in a home on Sheedy Road.

Police say 41-year-old Charles Tinio assaulted his mother and then went into the basement.

She called 911 after hearing a gun shot inside the home.

The SWAT team was unable to make contact with her son, and used tear gas before entering the home.

When they got inside, they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

His mother was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Officers say responding to these calls is difficult.

"One is the not knowing and the waiting, but to the officers who made the entry and found the person who killed himself — it's pretty hard for me to describe what everybody thinks about when they respond when they see something like that, especially on a holiday or as close to a holiday as we are," said Lt. Christopher Streno, Vestal Police Department.

The investigation is ongoing.
