It’s finally draft week with the first round set for Thursday night. That means we're in the home stretch for our Prospect Profile series.
This draft class has a lot of smaller, quick receivers. There are some bigger ones, but they don’t all move like teams would hope. TCU’s Quentin Johnston feels he packs the skillset of the little wideouts in his 6'3" and nearly 210-pound frame.
“Being a taller receiver, being able to get in and out of my breaks," said Johnston. "As a taller receiver, usually unless you’re already in the league and been there for a minute, it takes taller receivers more time to get in and out of breaks. Makes it easy for DBs. I feel like that’s something I work on a lot. Dropping my weight and playing like I’m 5’10.”
Johnston was an All-Big 12 honoree all three seasons he played for the Horned Frogs, including first-team nods each of the last two years.
He’s a big play guy, averaging 19 yards per catch over his TCU career, which included 115 grabs for nearly 2,200 yards and 14 touchdowns, half of which came this past season.
While Johnston’s got the body and production, the big concern with him is inconsistency in catching the football, often using his body rather than reeling in the ball just with his hands.
“Just know moving forward I’m going to try, am going to get out of that habit," said Johnston. "I’m catching a couple hundred balls a day outside of my body. It’s not like I can’t catch it. It’s something that’s just a natural instinct to do. But I’m going to work as hard as I can to eliminate that part of my game out there as quickly as possible.”
Johnston ran a 4-49 40 at his Pro Day, the same time Jordan Addison ran at the Combine, who Johnston outweighs by 35 pounds. He’s projected as a late first to second-round pick.
