After a 60-year-old church on Buffalo’s West Side partially collapsed on Sunday evening, the city called for an emergency demolition of the building on Monday.

Bishop McKinley Pompey of the Faith Temple Church of the Living God received a call on Sunday from the church’s neighbors on Rhode Island Street that the roof of the church was giving way on the west side of the building.

“Only part that we really heard, any given way, was when the chimney gave way on to our neighbor's property, and we did hear that,” said Pompey.

Video from Buffalo Fire Department shows the chimney collapsing and hitting the roof of the neighboring house on the right side. Buildings on both sides of the church were evacuated.

The City of Buffalo called for an emergency demolition of the church due to the entire building’s danger of imminent collapse.

“I think it's going to be a little loss for a little while, because we plan on still taking care of our business to our community, which means that we'll still be able to do what we have to do as far as giving away food, clothing and that sort of thing," said Pompey. "So hopefully it won't be a great loss for too long until we can get back.”

Pompey says his focus right now is continuing to bring together the community.

No one was injured as a result of the collapse.
