Since Spectrum News Raleigh’s first air date in 2002, Gary Stephenson has been informing communities across Raleigh about the weather they need to know before starting their day. A Raleigh native, Gary says being able to do the job he loves in the market he’s always called home is a dream come true. For Gary, knowing how much his viewers depend on him during severe weather and the responsibility his role holds is his greatest inspiration each day as he walks into the Raleigh newsroom.
With both the American Meteorological and the National Weather Association Television Seals of Approval, it’s safe to say that Gary is an expert in his field. More so, Gary uses his expert skills to help improve the lives of others in his community as a volunteer SkyWarn Weather Spotter, warning those around him of hazardous conditions.
Aside from meteorology, Gary’s next greatest passion is aviation. With a private pilot’s license, a commercial pilot’s license, and a multi-engine rating, Gary is as much of a pro in the air as he is in front of a green screen. When Gary isn’t predicting the next weather pattern, you can find him somewhere outdoors, either bird watching or at a good eastern North Carolina BBQ, usually with his wife (of over 30 years!) Lisa, his two children, and their rescue pets.
