SPRING HILL, Fla. — Residents in Hernando County say they would like to see more sidewalks installed on roadways in areas that are growing.
When walking to the store along County Line Road, Tyler Leach often finds himself in the grass.
“It’s uncomfortable walking an arm’s length away from that traffic,” he said of the area around the intersection of County Line Road and Anderson Snow Road., just west of the Suncoast Parkway.
It’s an area that has seen a lot of new businesses and developments in recent years.
Leach's grandparents live in Hernando County and he would like to see more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure that would help connect his grandparents and other residents those new neighborhoods with the shops nearby.
“There’s a lot of people, including myself, that would appreciate a sidewalk," he said. "So we don’t have to drive to these places."
In fact, there are the beginnings of a sidewalk at the nearby Publix shopping center, but the walkway ends abruptly and goes nowhere.
Hernando County officials say that there are no current plans to expand sidewalks in that area. However, there are sidewalks and trails available on the other side of the Suncoast Parkway.
Leach said he hopes that will change — not just for convenience, but for safety as well.
“I’d be concerned for anybody walking alongside this road because of the speed of the traffic,” he said.
