COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina Gamecocks plan to retire the jersey of A’ja Wilson early next year.

The Basketball standout became the school's first number one WNBA draft pick upon her graduation in 2018. Wilson is the program's first four-time All-American player of the year from the 2018 season according to the university of South Carolina.

She helped lead the Gamecocks to their first SEC Tournament championship, as well as the teams first chance to be in the NCAA Final Four in 2015. She was also there to help lead the team to its first NCAA National Championship in 2017.

Her high school career began in Columbia before continuing her record-setting college career in the same city, according to the university. Additionally in 2021, the school installed an eleven foot bronze statue in her honor outside of the main entrance of the Colonial Life Arena.

The university leaders say Wilson’s jersey will officially be retired following a pregame ceremony scheduled for Sunday Feb. 2, before the Gamecocks take on Auburn at Colonial Life Arena.
