The start of spring brings the return of warm weather, allergies and strawberry season.

Strawberry season in North Carolina typically lasts from mid-April to the end of May, and farms across the state are opening up for picking.

Below you can find a map of strawberry fields across the state where you can pick your own strawberries, but here's some things you should know before you go:

  • Strawberry fields are still farms. They can be dusty, muddy and uneven depending on recent weather, so be sure to choose your shoes and clothes accordingly
  • Strawberries won't ripen after you pick them, so pick only the red berries
  • Plan to go early, especially on weekends. Fields can be picked clean as early as noon
  • Hours fluctuate, so always call or check hours before you go
  • Don’t wash the berries until you are ready to use them. Washing makes them spoil faster
  • Many fields don't allow pets due to safety guidelines, so make sure to check before going
