FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — It's not every day you see a uniformed police officer passing out bouquets of flowers. But that's what Police Chief Brandon Medina, Captain Tim Smith and other officers with the Fuquay-Varina Police Department were doing on Wednesday.

- The goal is to spread random acts of kindness
It's a part of an initiative called "Petal It Forward." The program is put on yearly by the Society of American Florist as a way to spread random acts of kindness.
Donna Pittman is the owner of Flowers on Broad Street. Her flower shop has been participating in the good will day for seven years.
"Officers will give out one of these [bouquets] for someone to keep and another one to give to someone else. People understand you get just as much joy out of giving and receiving flowers," Pittman said.
Pittman says flowers are a way of showing affection, no matter the occasion.
"It's soothing, it sends love, it's the best way to show love. People always smile when we deliver flowers, they’re always smiling," Pittman said.
Patrol Captain Tim Smith has been participating in the event every year since it started.
"Many smiles have come out of this. I’ve literally had people cry and say I’ve had the worst day and getting a bouquet of flowers has turned it around," Smith said.
