HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — People in Hillsborough are trying to add some light to the longest day of the year for the winter solstice.

This year‘s annual solstice lantern celebration will look a little different. Typically people walk in a large group along the Hillsborough Riverwalk to show off their creations.

This year the celebration will be a self-guided tour.

Families are still encouraged to make their own lanterns and share them with the community.

Jeanetta Hopkins owns Bull City Music School-Hillsborough. She used music to inspire her design, and her family helped her make lanterns with music notes on them to hang from her windows.

“More so than ever now I feel that people’s creativity really needs to be tapped into,” Hopkins says. “As people walk through, I hope they experience the stillness and take that time to just connect with themselves and the music.”
