RALEIGH, N.C. — A family is moving their annual haunted house outside to raise money and to be cautious of COVID-19.

The Thompsons started this haunted house in 2017, the same year Edward was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. After a yearlong battle, Edward is in remission.

Now, the 15-year-old uses his haunted house to raise money for organizations that help children with illnesses.

This year, he is donating to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"When I got my wish, it was so exciting, and it was one of the best experiences ever," Edward said. "We had so much fun. And, we would not have been able to make it without Make-A-Wish and people donating."

Last year, the haunted house reached a record of $5,000.

Sarah Thompson, Edward's mom, says it's important to keep the haunted house safe for guests and her son.

"Many of his chemos caused lung damage, and he had already had asthma prior...so his lungs are just kind of in bad shape," Sarah Thompson said. "So, we always try to protect him from different viruses so that he can stay healthy and continue living a great teen life."

But, the family could not give up on Edward's favorite part of the year completely. From Oct. 23 to Oct. 31, you can drive by 9401 S. Mere Court in Raleigh to enjoy their haunted yard and donate to a good cause.

"What I love most about Halloween is just scaring people, having fun, and hanging out with friends — typically," Edward said. "But, what I love most about this haunted house is giving back."
