GREENSBORO, N.C. — With a record number of absentee ballots in the state of North Carolina, the State Board of Elections launched BallotTrax.
It's where you can track your absentee ballot from start to finish with text, email, and voice alerts.
The executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections said mail-in voting participation in the Tar-Heel State is normally between three to five percent, but she expects that to jump to between 30 and 40 percent because of the coronavirus.
"That means that there are a lot of individuals that won't know how this process works, and so this was just another way we could help them understand the process and feel confident that voting by mail, they can make sure their vote still counts," Karen Brinson Bell said.
One voter said it offers a sense of security.
"I'm super, super excited about BallotTrax. I think it's a great way to keep our elections and our absentee ballot process safe and secure," Noah Ambrose said.
BallotTrax offered the software to the North Carolina State Board of Elections for free this year. Brinson Bell said she expect the board to use the software in future elections.
As of Friday, September 18, the N.C. State Board of Elections reported more than 889,000 absentee ballot requests. At that same time in 2016, the board of elections reported around 66,000 requests.
