Many trucks have had their tops shredded off trying to cross under it.
The problem got so bad at one point that the state had to put up warning signs to alert drivers that they couldn't cross it.
NCDOT officials say the number of crashes has gone down over the years.
However, the North Carolina railroad company wants to eliminate the problem all together by raising the platform.
On Wednesday, crews will begin the two-week project. The actual raising of the bridge is planned for October 29.
