FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Mayor Mitch Colvin has a goal to get people experiencing homelessness inside homes and into stable jobs.

  • The Fayetteville City Council is looking into "tiny homes" as a possible solution to the city's homeless problem.
  • Fayetteville has about 350 homeless people.
  • The plan is to get them off the streets and into stable jobs.

On October 7, 2019, city council members voted to look into building a tiny home community just for the homeless. The mayor's plan also included getting the homeless paired with mental health services. Colvin said there are about 350 people living on the streets.

Spectrum News talked to homeless woman, Mary Oxendine, who said if the plan is approved it could help turn her life around.

"It's all about surviving," Oxendine said. "It's a day to day, minute to minute basis you know? Who doesn't want to be fresh and clean every day? Who doesn't want a hot meal every day? We really take it for granted when we have all of those things."

The mayor said the next steps include figuring out a location for the homes, the cost, and organizations to help.
