NORTH CAROLINA — Voters elected Republican Greg Murphy to replace longtime 3rd District Rep. Walter Jones Jr. in the U.S. House on Tuesday.

Polls closed at 7:30 p.m.

With almost 64% of precincts reporting at about 8:30 p.m., the District 3 race was called in Murphy's favor.

The 3rd District covers all or parts of Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan, Tyrrell, Dare, Hyde, Beaufort, Pamlico, Carteret, Pitt, Craven, Onslow, Jones, Lenoir, and Greene counties.

According to the website BallotPedia, President Donald Trump won the district in the 2016 election, garnering about 60 percent of the vote.

Jones served in the district from 1995 until his Feb. 10 death. He was 76 years old.
