ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. – Questions remain after a man was murdered in Lumberton early Wednesday morning.

  • Avery Scurlock, 23, of Lumber Bridge was found deceased in Lumberton Wednesday morning.
  • His 2016 Ford Fusion was recovered after the murder.
  • His family says he was meeting someone off a dating app.

The Sheriff’s office says 23-year-old Avery Scurlock was found shot to death in a field on Old Tower Road in the early morning hours.

Scurlock’s relatives say he was meeting a guy he met on the “Plenty of Fish” dating app after midnight.

His 2016 Ford Fusion, which was a focal point of the initial investigation, was recovered Wednesday afternoon. Relatives say it was stolen after the meet up.

At this point, the person’s identity who Scurlock is said to have been meeting with has not been released.

It is unknown if they are a suspect, or if the murder happened outside of their meeting.

Scurlock was found wearing leisure garb; a durag and bedroom shoes.
