VIRGINIA BEACH, N.C. -- Twelve people are dead and six more injured after a shooting took place inside a city municipal building in Virginia Beach.

  • Police say the shooter was a longtime current employee of Virginia Beach's Public Works Department.
  • The chief says the shooter walked in and began firing indiscriminately.
  • 12 people have died.

The chief says the shooter walked in and began firing a .45 caliber handgun with a suppressor indiscriminately. The lone gunman was killed in a shoot-out with responding officers.

Among those injured was a police officer, and the chief says his bulletproof vest saved his life.

 

 

 

Officials have said they will not be releasing the name of the suspect.

 

 
A motive for the shooting has not been established. 
 
On Monday, hundreds of other city workers filed into the Virginia Beach Convention Center for a somber gathering.
