RALEIGH, N.C. – The city of Raleigh is expected to break ground on Wilmington Street next week, digging six holes for new underground trash containers.

Because the city was built without alleys, trash collection has long been a problem that’s plagued downtown businesses, because trash carts have to be placed directly on sidewalks in front of businesses.

The new containers are partially buried underground and allow for the streets to be more clear.

Each new receptacle will be able to hold about 20 carts worth of trash, which businesses will share.

Eight businesses have already signed up to hand over their 95 gallon carts and use the new receptacles.
