NORTH CAROLINA -- There are concerns that this year's tick season could be one of the worst for areas of the state.

Scientists say the flooding and standing water from Hurricane Florence are contributing factors.

Some ticks carry disease such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis.

Spraying DEET on yourself or using a tick repellent can help prevent tick bites. Experts also recommend using wood chips against your home to prevent ticks from entering if you are likely to have a tick issue inside.

Doctors say it's important to check your body when you come in from outside and stay alert for symptoms if you do find a tick on yourself.

Common symptoms that can come from tick-related illnesses are:

  • Fever and chills
  • Aches and pain
  • Headache
  • Joint pain
  • Rash

If you do find a tick on yourself, doctors stress it's important you remove it right away carefully. Pull it from close to its mouth as close to your body as possible, and pull it up straight, do not twist.
