VASS, N.C. -- The largest charter school in Moore County will soon do away with five-day weeks in school.

  • Sandhills Theater Arts Renaissance School, or STARS, will have optional Fridays for students beginning the 2019-2020 school year.
  • The day will be used as a half day for students who choose to receive additional help in their classes.
  • By removing a fifth day from the week, the school year will start 10 days earlier than other charter and public schools in North Carolina.

Sandhills Theater Arts Renaissance School, or STARS, will have optional Fridays for students beginning the 2019-2020 school year. The day will be used as a half day for students who choose to receive additional help in their classes.

By removing a fifth day from the week, the school year will start 10 days earlier than other charter and public schools in North Carolina. Ten minutes will also be added to each day to meet the state's requirements for instructional time.

"This schedule for next year kind of gives us the opportunity to open things up and have, you know, four or five hours on Friday to utilize however we need to whether it's remediating those kids in small groups for state tests," math teacher Benjamin Kemp said.

School officials said there will be child care on Fridays and buses will run as normal.
