WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- Wake County Public Schools is considering adding the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr to its calendar.

  • A petition has been started to get Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, recognized by WCPSS.
  • The petition has nearly 5000 signatures.
  • The earliest the holiday could get added would be the 2020-2021 school year.

A mother has started a petition to get the day, which marks the end of Ramadan, recognized by the district.

She says thousands of Muslim children should be able to celebrate at home with family, without missing class or testing.

"Eid is a holiday that's already in place on calendars in New York and Maryland and Connecticut and Michigan and surely we can learn from them on to see how they accommodate for this testing, if testing where to happen on the teacher workday,” said Mariya Shaikh.

Nearly 5000 people have signed the petition. The earliest the school could add the holiday to the calendar is the 2020-2021 school year.

Until a decision is made, the school says it's accommodating as many holiday requests as the calendar allows.
