DURHAM, N.C. -- New businesses are coming to east Durham and those additions are as diverse as the city itself.

The broader the bases the higher the pyramid, that's becoming the motto of east Durham. The area is changing from what it was a few years ago. New businesses, and old ones too, are helping to make that change.

The Angier Avenue area has a lot more to offer than it did a year or so ago. Everything from new pizza shops to pharmacy stores are opening in the community.

“I like it. It's convenient I remember when east Durham had a pharmacy,” shopper Loraine Clay said. She says she also grew up in the area.

The owners of the Russell's Pharmacy and Shoppe say they have been wanting to start a locally owned pharmacy and bringing it to east Durham is a dream come true.

“My wife and I have worked really hard to try to get a place that makes a part of the community. We are happy to start Russell's Pharmacy here,” Dr. Darius Russell, the owner of the business, said.

Hoping that new spots like Sofia's Pizza and  Russell's can continue the tradition of family-owned businesses booming in the old east Durham community.

“When people walk in the door we try to remember their names. We want people to feel like they are a part of our family. When they walk in, we want them to feel like they are walking in our house,” Russell said.
