WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- The school dress code may be changed for Wake County Public School children.

  • Many say the current policy unfairly targets girls, forcing them to miss class time for an outfit deemed inappropriate.
  • The first draft board members are looking over asks students to dress as if they're going to a workplace.
  • The board plans to hear a revised draft again next month and vote on the potential changes in March or April.

For the past year, board members asked teachers and students to weigh in on the current policy. Many say it unfairly targets girls, forcing them to miss class time for an outfit deemed inappropriate.

The first draft board members are looking over asks students to dress as if they're going to a workplace, but some board members say that's too vague of a response.

"These are big changes, but they are the result of a year-long conversation at least, but also a movement to get more proactive and positive language in our policy," said board member Christine Kushner.

The board plans to hear a revised draft again next month and vote on the potential changes in March or April.
