CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Some Durham County homeowners are suing GoTriangle and the City of Durham regarding the proposed light rail.
- They filed paperwork in Durham County Superior Court Thursday, claiming city leaders unfairly rezoned an area near Farrington Road
- The plaintiffs want the court to “null and void” the rezoning
- Transit leaders previously said they picked the site because it was the best and had the least impact to the environment
They filed paperwork in Durham County Superior Court Thursday, claiming city leaders unfairly rezoned an area near Farrington Road to allow GoTriangle to build a maintenance yard.
“For one thing it's noisy. Another thing is that it's going to increase traffic. It's going to be open 24-7,” says Charles Herbst who lives nearby.
The plaintiffs want the court to “null and void” the rezoning. The proposed yard is part of a multi-billion dollar project to build a light rail, connecting Durham and Orange counties. The project is still going through the approval process. Once that's over, work could begin in 2020 and last until 2028.
GoTriangle released this statement to Spectrum News:
GoTriangle has received a copy to the complaint and our legal team will be reviewing it carefully.
Transit leaders previously said they picked the site because it was the best and had the least impact to the environment. They also said they will work to minimize any disruptions.
