DURHAM, N.C. — It was a nice ride, but Durham's bike share programs have run their courses.

  • City officials say the companies “Lime” and “Spin” decided not to renew their permits to keep bicycles operating in the Bull City.
  • The companies didn't offer a reason as to why.
  • Last year, the city council approved the use of e-scooters and are currently going through applications.

City officials say the companies “Lime” and “Spin” decided not to renew their permits to keep bicycles operating in the Bull City. The companies didn't offer a reason as to why. Spectrum News reached out to Lime. A company spokesperson said that company is switching to scooters and will continue to operate in Durham. Spectrum News also reached out to Spin but haven't heard back.

“I liked them because they were easily accessible. You can pick them up quick and drop them off quick,” said Sydney Browne, a Durham resident.

“Well in terms of cleanliness, I kind of appreciate that they're not here anymore because you would see them lying on the side of the road,” said Erika Alexander, another resident.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator Dale McKeel tells Spectrum News he believes the companies are focusing solely on electric scooters. Last year, the city council approved the use of e-scooters and are currently going through applications. McKeel hopes to see scooters rolling within a year.
